Current Consensus

This whole guide is about making characters that work mechanically. But the point of the game is to have fun at the table, and a perfectly optimized character you don't enjoy playing is worse than a slightly suboptimal one you love. Take the cool feat if it makes you happy. Play the weird race if the flavor grabs you. Just do it with your eyes open. Know what you're giving up and decide that the tradeoff is worth it for your enjoyment. The best builds are the ones where the player is excited to show up every week. If reading through your character sheet doesn't make you want to play, something went wrong and it probably isn't your stat allocation.
